Transforming Linear Functions
This worksheet will allow you to explore transformations of linear functions using technology.
Be as detailed in your responses as possible (complete sentences please).
1. Identify the equation for the starting function (black, f(x)).
2. Click the box next to f(x+k). What happens to the red line when k is 0? 3? -3? What kind of transformation is this? Why does the line change?
3. Turn off f(x+k) by clicking its box. Click the box next to f(x)+h.What happens to the blue line when h is 0? 2? -2? What kind of transformation is this? Why does the line change?
4. Turn off f(x)+h. Click the box next to f((1/b)*x). What happens when the green line when b is -4, -1, 0, 1, and 4? What kind of transformation is this? Why does the line change?
5. Turn off f((1/b)*x). Click the box next to a*f(x). What happens to the orange line when a is -3, 0, or 3? What kind of transformation is this? Why does the line change?
