Saving GeoGebra files

Note: While working in this GeoGebra Book, the constructions you create in the provided applets won't be saved in this Book automatically. However, if you also want to save them separately to your GeoGebra account or your computer you might want to follow the instructions below.

Saving your GeoGebra files to the GeoGebra resources platform

To save a GeoGebra file to your GeoGebra account you need to...
  • open the Menu in the top right corner of the GeoGebra Classic app.
  • select Save from the File menu.
  • enter a file name and confirm by selecting Save.
Note: To upload your file to the GeoGebra Resources Platform, you need to be signed in to your GeoGebra account. If you don't have an account yet, or are not signed in, you need to either create a new account or sign in to your existing account.  The saved GeoGebra file appears on tab Resources on your profile page as an Activity. It can be edited later on, shared with others, or integrated into a GeoGebra Book. Note: If you choose not to sign in, you can save the file on your computer instead (extension .ggb).

Try it yourself...

Saving your GeoGebra files to your computer

To save a GeoGebra file to your computer you need to...
  • open the Menu in the top right corner of the GeoGebra Classic app.
  • select Download as... from the File menu.
  • choose your preferred file format.
  • enter a file name and select Export/Save.
Note: If you choose the file name extension .ggb you can save your current construction as a GeoGebra file.

Creating Activities

GeoGebra allows you to create interactive webpages, so-called Activities, from your files. You can either...
  • export an Activity directly from GeoGebra ( File menu, option  Share), or
  • create an Activity using the online Activity Editor on the GeoGebra Website.

Choose a file name

We recommend the following naming conventions for files:
  • Avoid using spaces or special characters in a file name, since they can cause unnecessary problems when the file is shared and transferred to other computers.
  • Instead, you can use underscores or upper case letters within the file name (e.g. My_First_Construction.ggb).

Exporting pictures

GeoGebra’s  Graphics View can be exported as a picture. Thus, it can be easily inserted into text processing or presentation documents, allowing you to create appealing sketches for tests, quizzes, notes or mathematical games. GeoGebra will export the entire  Graphics View as a picture, so you might want to reduce unnecessary space and prepare the Graphics View:
  • Move your figure (or the relevant section of your construction) to the top left corner of the Graphics View using the Move tool and dragging the background. Hint: You can use the tools Zoom In and Zoom Out to prepare your figure for the export process.
  • Reduce the size of the app window by dragging its lower right corner with the mouse or your finger. Hint: The pointer will change its shape when hovering above an edge or corner of the app window.
You can export a picture as a png-file in the Menu in the top right corner of the app. From the File menu, select Export Image and choose between Copy to Clipboard and Download. The picture of the Graphics View is now saved on your computer and can be inserted into any word processing or presentation document.
