Empirical Method

We conduct the experiment repeatedly. Each repetition of the experiment is called a trial. As the number of trials increases the probability of A is better approximated by The probability of event A is approximated by the relative frequency of the event A. Recall relative frequency is the frequency divided by total. If we use computers to simulate the experiment we need to ensure our model is accurate to the real world. Also called relative frequency approximation.

Example: Buffon's Needle

If we drop a needle that is 1 inch long on a surface that has lines 2 inches apart, then what is the probability that the needle will cross a line? This is a tricky question to answer theoretically. So use the simulation below and the empirical approach give an approximation and a guess.
