1.29 Midsegment of a Triangle (r1)

Follow these steps to construct the midsegment of the triangle below.
  1. Click on the "Midpoint or Center" tool and then on point A and point B to mark the midpoint of AB.
  2. Click on the "Midpoint or Center" tool and then on point A and point C to mark the midpoint of AC.
  3. Click on the Segment" tool and then on your two midpoints from steps 1 and 2 to construct the midsegment.
  4. Click on the "Distance or Length" tool and then on your two midpoints from steps 1 and 2 to measure the midsegment.
  5. Click on the "Distance or Length" tool and then on point B and point C to measure the third side of the triangle.

What do you notice about the relationship between the midsegment (DE) and the third side of the triangle (BC)? Hint: Divide the length of the third side by the length of the of the midsegment.

Click on the "Move" tool and then click on a move the points A, B, and C. Does this relationship hold true for any triangle?
