Number - KS3 resources

MEI has adapted the following resources for use in the UK classroom. The Number set of resources contains six units. Each unit includes a series of lessons comprising a GeoGebra activity for use during the lesson and a GeoGebra activity suitable for independent student learning. Each lesson also comes with a lesson plan detailing the planning behind each question in the activities, together with the answers. Using GeoGebra Classroom, teachers are able to monitor and formatively assess their students’ work and progress in real time on any type of device. If you wish to view the resources in their original state, please visit Illustrative Mathematics (IM).

Number 1 - Dividing fractions In this unit, students examine how the relative sizes of numerator and denominator affect the size of their quotient when numerator or denominator (or both) is a fraction. Number 2 - Arithmetic in base ten In this unit, students compute sums, differences, products, and quotients of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals, using efficient algorithms. Number 3 - Rational numbers

In this unit, students interpret signed numbers in contexts. They understand and use the terms “positive number,” “negative number,” “rational number,” “opposite,” “sign,” “absolute value,” “a solution to an inequality,” “less than,” “greater than,” and the corresponding symbols. Number 4 - Rational number arithmetic In this unit, students interpret signed numbers in contexts (e.g., temperature, elevation, deposit and withdrawal, position, direction, speed and velocity, percent change) together with their sums, differences, products, and quotients. Number 5 - Exponents and scientific notation In Year 7, students studied whole-number exponents. In this unit, they extend the definition of exponents to include all integers, and in the process codify the properties of exponents. Number 6 - Pythagorean theorem and irrational numbers In this unit, students work with geometric and symbolic representations of square and cube roots.
