Notice and Wonder: Triangle Midsegment Theorem

Part 1: Create a triangle and Measure the segments

Create: Step 1. Click on the point icon, then click the screen 3 times to create the vertices of a triangle. Step 2. Click on triangle icon, click on the polygon, click on each point to connect. Step 3. Click on the last icon, x y axis, and click show label, click each point. Measure: Step 1: Click on the angle icon, then on the distance or length icon in the drop down menu. Step 2: Click on the segment you wish to measure. Step 3: Repeat for the remaining two segments. Step 4: You may drag the measurements around.

Part 2: Creating midpoints

Step 1: Click on the point icon, then on the midpoint or center icon in the drop down menu. Step 2: Click on the segment on which you want to place the midpoint. Step 3: Repeat for the remaining two segments.

Part 3: Creating midsegments - segments connecting two midpoints.

Step 1: Click on the line icon, then on the segment icon in the drop down menu. Step 2: Click on two midpoints to create a midsegment. Step 3: Repeat to create three midsegments.

Part 4: Measure the midsegments

Use the directions in Part 1 to measure each of the midsegments. *** Take a screenshot of your triangle so you can check your work at the end of the warm up. ***

Part 5: Discovering the Midsegment Theorem

Drag each of the points of the original triangle around, paying close attention to the measurements of the sides and the midsegments. What do you notice? What do you think the Midsegment Theorem is?
