Kang So-hwi (Korea Expressway Corporation), Han Da-hye (Paper Savings Bank), and Choi Eun-ji (Heungkuk Life Insurance) left the team, while veterans Jung Dae-young and Han Su-ji left the courtroom. The plan for the next season of GS Caltex's new coach Lee Young-taek has become complicated.
The negotiation period for the 2024 Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) Women's Free Agent (FA) ended at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The fate of the 18 players announced by the FA has been decided.
Ten players, including Jeong Ji-yoon, Na Hyun-soo (Hyundai Engineering & Construction), Kim Mi-yeon, Lee Won-jeong (Heungkuk Life Insurance), Yellow, Park Eun-jin, Park Hye-min (Chief of the Articles of Incorporation), Kim Ha-kyung, Kim Hyun-jung (BIBK Industrial Bank), and Ko Ui-jeong (Korea Expressway Corporation), remained in the original team. Kim Hae-bin (Pepper Savings Bank) did not sign a contract, and all seven others changed teams.
The biggest players were Korea Expressway Corporation and IBK Industrial Bank of Korea. Kang So-hwi and Lee So-young, who were considered the biggest fish, respectively, emerged as dark horses for the next season.
In particular, Kang So-hwi signed a contract with the Korea Expressway Corporation for 800 million won (464,970 U.S. dollars) in compensation for the female FA team. This is the highest amount ever, surpassing Kim Yeon-koung (Heungkuk Life Insurance) and Park Jung-ah (Pepper Savings Bank), who received 775 million won (727,940 dollars) in compensation for the FA contract last year.
For GS Caltex, Kang's transfer is a painful loss. Kang, who joined GS Caltex as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015-2016 season rookie draft, won the Rookie of the Year award from his first season since his debut, and has since been named the best seven (2019-2020, 2021-2022 season) and the KOVO Cup MVP three times (2017, 2020 and 2023). In the 2020-2021 season, he played the role of a native ace by contributing to GS Caltex's integrated victory.
In this season, he displayed excellent performance in both offense and defense. He ranked 12th in scoring (444 points) and 10th in overall offense (39.30 percent), the second highest overall success rate among Korean players after Kim Yeon-koung (44.98 percent) in particular in overall offense. He ranked eighth overall in receiving efficiency with 37.02 percent, and fourth overall excluding Libero. Digg also ranked ninth (3.297 per set) in overall defense (5.703 per set).
IBK Industrial Bank of Korea has strengthened its power by recruiting Lee So-young and national middle blocker Lee Ju-ah. Lee signed a 700 million won (722,000 dollars) compensation contract and Lee Ju-ah signed a 400 million won (320,000 dollars) contract.
GS Caltex, on the other hand, has taken a passive stance. Kim Ju-hyang, who played for Hyundai Engineering & Construction, is the only free agent who was hired outside the company. During the three-year contract period, he signed a total of 220 million won (222,000 dollars) for the 2024-2025 season, the first season of his contract, and 250 million won (222,000 dollars) for the 2025-2026 season and the 2026-2027 season.
Even Choi Eun-ji left the team after signing a contract with Heungkuk Life Insurance for a total of 160 million won (130 million won per year and 30 million won per year), the deadline for the FA negotiations on Thursday. A total of three FA teams transferred to the team and failed to crack down on the "House Rabbit."
On top of that, two veteran middle blockers announced their retirement at the same time after the end of the season. Jung Dae-young, the oldest active player in the women's division, has come to an end. Han Soo-ji, who was released as a free agent, also left the court without a contract.
GS Caltex recorded 18 wins and 18 losses and 51 points in this season, ranking fourth with 10 par behind third-place Jeong Kwan-jang (61 points). As the semi-playoff, which can be made only when the gap between the third and fourth place is less than three points, failed to advance to the post season. It failed to perform in the spring volleyball tournament for two consecutive seasons. 토토사이트
GS Caltex thus opted for a new change. It concluded an eight-year partnership with Cha Sang-hyun, who took the helm during the season in December 2016, and appointed Lee Young-taek, who served as the senior coach of IBK Industrial Bank, as its new head coach.
Coach Lee Young-taek, who newly took the helm, lost five players as soon as he took the helm. Now, he has to decide on Asian quarterbacks, foreign player drafts, and rookie drafts. It remains to be seen how new coach Lee Young-taek will overcome this difficulty.
