Sivas - Şifaiye Madrassa

The Şifaiye Madrassa in Sivas (Turkey) was built in 1217 in the periode of the Rûm Seljuks by Sultan Kaykaus I. On the website of Shiro Takahashi we can find the plan of the muqarnas above the entrance.
In the drawing by Shiro Takahashi you can notice that, apart from the edges of the muqarnas, the plan is built completely out of squares and rhombuses. WHen coloring the lines of the different layers we notice:
  • All squares match with squares cells .
  • The (on the plan) lying squares match with rhombic cells.
  • The (on the plan) standing rhombuses match with the division into small bipeds and almonds.
Remarcably this in these divisions is that order of the two is not always the same.
  • Two times the almond is used as intermediate element and support for a little biped. (layer 2-3 and layer 4-5)
  • Two times the little biped is used as intermediate element and support for an almond. (layer 6-7 and layer 8-9)
When working out the whole plan with tiles, this is the result:
