Complex Solution of Quadratic Equations
Description
A quadratic equation is known to have the solution from the Quadratic Formula which results in complex numbers for some values. A complex number is represented as where . This imaginary number, , can be on axis that is perpendicular to the real axis. The concept is that the axis is perpendicular to the real axis so is not visible on the real axis.
The applet below has slides to vary the coefficient values, , showing solution values as they are varied. The past solution values can be erased with the Clear button.
This concept can be extended to multiple axes with Quaternions where are axes perpendicular to the axes respectively.
