Alg I: Intro to Absolute Value Equation

Feel free to move the BIG PURPLE POINTS anywhere you'd like prior to sliding the slider. Investigate what happens when we put some math operations into the absolute value. Answer each question as you work through the activity.

Don't move the purple dots. Slide the slider. What do you notice? Share below.

Move the purple dots to a new position. Slide the slider. What is the new equation? What are the solutions?

How does your new graph and equation compare to the original graph and equation?

Move the purple dots, then slide the slider. Hit reset and try a different set up. Focus on the numbers in your equation and where they "show up" on the graph. What do you think the numbers in the equation mean?

Consider the absolute value equation |x - 2| = 5. What does this equation represent (what do the numbers mean)? What would it look like on the graph?

How about |x + 3| = 9?

What do you think happens if we multiply? Say, |2x| = 8?

Challenge: What can you tell me about |x - 1| = -6?
