Reflections part 1

What do we notice about how triangle ABC transformed into triangle A'B'C'? How would you describe this in words?

What direction did the shape move in?

What are the new vertices of A'B'C'?

Did the x or y values change? If so how did they change?

What can we say about how the shape as a whole moved?

What statement or rule can we create from this image?

Does your rule work for this image as well? Check your rule by applying it to your vertices. If it works keep moving. If not try to correct your rule/ statement and then move on.

Now use your rule to flip ABC over the PINK line.

STOP! STOP! STOP!

Take this time to discuss with your groups the rules you have created. Are they similar or very different? Do they work? Once you discuss in your group ask the teacher to come over before you move forward.

Now use your rule to flip ABC over the PINK line.

Reflecting over the y axis.

The transformation being performed is called a REFLECTION. This means that we are creating a mirror image of our pre-image across a line of our choosing. This line happens to be the y-axis.

What happens to our vertices when we REFLECT over the y-axis?

In this example our LINE OF REFLECTION is the x-axis. This means our image will be "flipped" over the x-axis.

Reflect this image across the x-axis. Give your new vertices and label them A',B',C',D'
