The Mod 9 Clock

This is an Applet of the mod 9 Clock. You can click New Problem to generate a random integer (n) between 0 and 100 and then move the slider to see n in mod 9.
Hit the "New Problem" button and use the slider to find the number given in mod 9. What do you think the numbers on the clock represent? Try to figure out the following using what you know from the question just asked: 55 in mod 9=? 67 in mod 9=? 36 in mod 9=? When you think you have the answer check it using the mod 9 clock. If the numbers on the clock represent the remainders, what do you think we use modular arithmetic for? Why did we create such a system of mathematics?
