4.4 Exploration, example #2

Directions

For examples #1 & 2, you will perform a double reflection over two lines that are parallel to each other. Use the applet to perform the given double reflection. After, answer the questions to deduce a pattern for a generic double reflection over parallel lines.

Example #2

  1. Trace over the triangle with the polygon tool
  2. Use the line tool to add in the lines y = 3 and y = -2
  3. Reflect the triangle over the line y = 3
  4. Reflect the image over the line y = -2

Things to consider

Were your conjectures from the first example correct? If not, what prediction did you revise after this example?

Conclusion

Use your results to examples #1 & 2 to answer the following questions:
  1. A double reflection over parallel lines is the same as what transformation?
  2. How does the distance between parallel lines of reflection compare to the magnitude (size) of the transformation?
  3. How do you determine the direction of this transformation?
Write your answers to these questions in your notebook.
