Malatya - Ulu Camii

The Great Mosque of Malatya dates from 1224, during the reign of the Seljuk sultan Ala al-Din Kayqubad I. See: https://archnet.org/sites/2057 We can find a plan of the ont the website of Shiro Takahashi

Sivas and Malatya

Both muqarnas are using the same basic tiling of squares and rhombuses around a half 8-pointed star. But the realisation is different.
  • The tiling doesn't fit with the edges so additional tiles are needed. The solution in Sivas differs from the one in Malatya.
  • In Sivas the lines marking the layers always follow the edges of the squares. In Malatya the red line defnine combinations of large bipeds and jugs.
  • In both muqarnas we can find the combination of small bipeds and almonds, but the alternation is different.
