IM 6.1.1 Lesson: Tiling the Plane

Which pattern doesn’t belong? Explain why you think this pattern choice doesn't belong here.

In your pattern, which shapes cover more of the plane: blue rhombuses, red trapezoids, or green triangles?  Explain how you know. You may use the sliders and the shapes in this app to help. Explore what you can see or hide, and what you can move or turn. Select the statement that best applies. (If your teacher assigned both patterns to you, select 2 answer choices.)

Your teacher will assign you to look at Pattern A or Pattern B.

For the previous question, identify the pattern you were assigned and explain how you know your answer to the previous question is true.

See directions in the next question about what to build in this app.

In the app above, create a tiling pattern so that

  • the pattern has at least two different shapes
  • the same amount of the plane is covered by each type of shape.
Toolbar ImageUse the RIGID POLYGON tool to construct a shape. See the quick silent screencast below to learn how to use this tool.
Toolbar ImageUse the MOVE tool to deselect (turn off) any of the other tools. Select this tool when you want to move shapes around.
Below, explain how you know your construction meets both criteria.
