Try to Graph the Derivative Function

This applets lets you try to construct a graph of the derivative of a random function. Raise or lower the points to indicate the derivative of the function at that point.

Select the first two boxes on the rhs and begin moving the blue dots up and down to create the derivative of the function shown. Once completed, check your work using "Show Derivative." Try a New Function without using tan segments.

The checkboxes will let you:
  • Connect the points of the constructed derivative with a smooth curve
  • Show tangent segments on the original curve from the proposed derivative
  • Show the graph of the actual derivative.
A button lets you choose a new random function. the accuracy reading goes up to 100. This applet is based on one produced by Marc Renault.

Question

Are the Tan Segments helpful to you? What do they represent and how do they help you in sketching the derivative of the function f(x)? Explain.

Try sketching the derivative on your own, for the given function f(x).
