The Fastest Way Down a Mountain (gradient)

This applet shows the graph of a function f(x,y). The vector emanating from point A is constructed as follows: the projection onto the xy-plane is a unit vector in the opposite direction of the gradient of A so that the vector points in the direction of steepest descent. The z component of the vector is the magnitude of the gradient.
