Which goes first: shoes or socks?
OBJECTIVE: To learn how to perform chain operations on integers
In previous lessons, you learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.

In this lesson, you're going to learn how to perform chain operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and grouping symbols.
A common mnemonic used in performing chain operations is PEMDAS, or its expanded form, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. The letters, in order, stand for Parentheses (or other grouping symbols), Exponents, Multiplication or Division (whichever comes first from left to right) and Addition or Subtraction (whichever comes first from left to right).
For ease of reading, grouping symbols may be nested from innermost to outermost as follows: Parentheses, Brackets (square brackets), Braces (curly braces) as illustrated—{ [ ( ) ] }. Simplification begins with the innermost symbol.
Examples:
27 - 36 ÷ 12 - 5 (2 - 7)
= 27 - 36 ÷ 12 - 5 (-5)
= 27 - 3 + 25
= 24 + 25
= 49
2 + 2 (10 - 7)2 ÷ 5 • 1 (9 - 4) - 8
= 2 + 2 (3)2 ÷ 5 • 1 (5) - 8
= 2 + 2 (9) ÷ 5 • 1 (5) - 8
= 2 + 18 ÷ 5 • 1 (5) - 8
= 2 + 3.6 • 1 (5) - 8
= 2 + 3.6 (5) - 8
= 2 + 18 - 8
= 20 - 8
= 12
Use the applet below to practice performing chain operations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses. Exponents will be dealt with later.
