Describing and Performing Translations

This activity involves the use of tools to plot points and draw lines. If you are not sure how to do that on Geogebra, watch this video. Also, note that there is a glossary of key terms at the end of the activity.

Translating by a Vector

Use the following interactive demonstration to investigate the relationship between a vector and a translation. Use the sliders to change the distance between Triangle A (pink) and the reflected image, labelled B (green). You can change the distance in the x direction (left or right) and the y direction (up or down). You can also move Triangle A or it's vertices. Pay attention to what happens to the vector when you move the sliders or the original shape.

Describing Translations

In the first set of questions, describe the translation from the pink shape to the green shape. You can use the drawing tools on the graphs to help work out the translation.

Performing Translations

Use the tools available to draw the image when each shape is translated by the given vector. Check the video at the beginning of the task or ask your teacher if you are unsure of how to use the tools to draw a shape.

Glossary of Terms

Vector - A description of the translation of a point or shape. The top number indicates the horizontal movement (positive indicates right, negative indicates left) and the bottom number indicates the vertical movement (positive indicates up, negative indicates down). Translation - The movement of a shape in a horizontal and/or vertical direction. Vertices - The corners of a shape.
