Exploring Nets of 3D shapes

Work through the following nets of 3D shapes. With each net, take note of the shapes of the faces used to create it, how many faces there are, and investigate how many ways the net can be put together. Answer the questions at the end of the worksheet using what you have just learned.

Cube

Cylinder

Square based pyramid: could this net be put together any other way? What do you think?

Cone

Rectangular Prism

Now that you have explored the nets of the above shapes, see how many nets of a cube you can create with the squares below!

Nets of Solids

How many nets of a cube can be made?

Does the net of the cylinder have the same number of faces as a solid cylinder?

Name the properties of the square based pyramid. Include how many faces, edges and vertices.

How many faces does a cone have?

What shapes make up the net of a rectangular prism?

Choose a net from the above figures and sketch it in your work book. Next to the net list the properties of the solid shape it forms. This includes how many faces, edges, vertices and the shapes that make up the net. You must also identify and list one everyday object of the same shape.
