Visualizing z-scores

This interactive figure will help you to visualize how to turn raw scores into z-scores.
  • First enter a values for the Raw score between -8 and 8, and press enter.
  • Next, enter a value for the mean between -5 and 5, and press enter.
  • Finally, enter a value for the standard deviation between 0.25 and 3, and press enter.
You will then be prompted to "slide" the given distribution to a mean of 0. Once you have completed this correctly, you will then be prompted to squeeze the distribution so the standard deviation is 1. This leads to the z-score formula , where the difference of the raw score and the mean ("slide" to mean of zero) is divided ("squeezed") by the standard deviation.

Things to think about...

  • If the standard deviation is 3, what would you need to enter for a raw score and mean so the z-score is 2?
  • If the raw score is 3, what would you need to enter for the standard deviation and mean so the z-score is 2?
  • If the mean is 3, what would you need to enter for a raw score and standard deviation so the z-score is 2?
  • If the z-score is 3, what would you need to enter for a raw score, mean, and standard deviation?
