Add and Subtract Fractions
Instructions
1. Select whether you want to be adding or subtracting fractions by click on the 'Subtract Fractions' button.
2. To change the fractions in the calculation, click on the 'Fraction Sliders' box and adjust the slider that appear. Note, only proper fractions are available in the question.
3. At this stage the blue slider can be adjusted so that the two circle become superimposed, showing that the parts are not of equal size (assuming your fractions have different denominators). Move the slider back once shown.
4. Click on the 'Equivalent Fraction' box to convert the circles to having the same size parts, also showing the abstract equivalent fraction conversion.
5. Adjust the blue slider to superimpose the two circles, now showing that the parts are of equal size and hence can be added/subtracted.
6. Click on the 'Evaluate Result' box to show the numerical result of the calculation, simplifying the result if possible.
7. If there is a purple region in the diagram following an addition, the result is a number greater than 1. Clicking on the 'Mixed Number Result' box will show the alternative result, and adjusting the purple slider will represent this more clearly by splitting the diagram into the whole and part.
8. If a subtraction has been performed, the remaining blue region in the diagram represents what's left over following the calculation. Adjusting the purple slider split this result out of the diagram, making the result more clear.
9. If a subtraction has been performed and there is a remaining red region in the diagram instead of blue, this represents a negative result following the calculation. Again adjusting the purple slider split this result out of the diagram, making the result more clear.
