Lesson Information

Subject: Mathematics
Grade Level:7th
Duration:30 min
Technology setting:student computers

Topic

Exploration, derivation and practice of the area formula to calculate the area of a kite.

Learning Outcomes

Students know the properties of a kite and they use this to derive the area formula of a kite. They understand the derivation and can apply the formulas to calculate the area.

Lesson Objectives and Assessment

Lesson Objectives Students know the properties of a kite. Students can explain the derivation of the area formula of a kite. Students are able to calculate the area of kites, rhombuses and squares. Assessment The students have to present their calculations and give feedback to each other.

Teaching Strategies

Introduction: The teacher explains the content, the sequence and if applicable the use of technology in this lesson. Main Activity: The students explore and practice the calculation of a kite in their own speed by using a computer. Therefore they work on the worksheets in the second chapter of this book. Conclusion: Every student gets a copy with different kites and they have to calculate the areas on their own. Then they present their result to a partner and give feedback to each other.

Technology Integration

Throughout the lesson computers or tablets are needed and the students work independently on the GeoGebra worksheets. It is advantageous if the students are familiar with working with GeoGebra worksheets.
